Welcome to the cherry and university town of Witzenhausen

The cherry and university town known as Witzenhausen is composed of 16 districts, is charmingly imbedded in romantic Werratal, and is the center of one of the largest and oldest cherry producing regions in Germany. The cherry has been the symbol of the town for more than a century and a half. The identification of the “Cherry Town” is especially apparent at the end of April and beginning of May, when the approximate 150,000 cherry trees located around the town show their white flowers.

The attractive old town with its timber-latticed houses displays middle age culture and architecture spanning eight centuries. Special highlights include the Renaissance town hall, the Liebfrauen church, St. Michael’s chapel, as well as the rest of the town wall with its towers and the former Wilhelmiten monastery. We preserve the old and welcome the new. Additionally, Witzenhausen is the smallest university town in Germany, home to the University of Kassel’s Environmentally Sustainable Agricultural Sciences program, the first of its kind in Europe. Furthermore, Witzenhausen is an ideal departure location to start an impressive cycling trip or to hike on premium trails. Be our guest!
